Fasting FBS, as the name implies, means abstaining from the consumption of any liquids other than water for eight hours. Used as a diabetes test, says Dr. Denis Slinkin. After fasting, there is a test for carbohydrate metabolism, which measures blood glucose levels.
GLUCAGON DURING FASTING
When starving, hormonal glucagon is stimulated, which increases plasma glucose levels in the body. If the patient does not have diabetes, his body will produce insulin to restore the balance of increased glucose levels, Slinkin came to this conclusion.
However, people with diabetes either do not produce enough insulin to rebalance their blood sugar (usually in type 1 diabetes) or their body is unable to use insulin effectively enough (typical for type 2 diabetes).Consequently, when blood glucose levels are tested, people with diabetes will have blood sugar levels significantly higher than people without diabetes.
WHAT’S A BLOOD SUGAR TEST FBS USED FOR AT THE POST?
An on-the-fly blood sugar test is also used to test the efficacy of various drugs or dietary changes in people already diagnosed as diabetic.
The fasting test should be conducted in two separate cases to ensure consistent results and avoid false diagnoses. This is because elevated blood glucose levels may be the result of Cushing’s syndrome – liver or kidney disease, eclampsia and pancreatitis. However, many of these conditions are often identified in laboratory diagnostic tests.
